There are some moments that make you especially grateful to be a photographer. Capturing a surprise proposal at Black Balsam Knob was one of those moments for me.
With mountain views stretching into the distance and a question that would change everything for this couple, this evening along the Blue Ridge Parkway was such a special one to photograph.
From a Sunrise Plan to a Sunset Proposal
Originally, we planned for a sunrise proposal. As the day got closer, the weather had us reconsidering, and we shifted the plan to sunset.
Surprise proposals take a little coordination even when everything goes according to plan. Add mountain weather into the mix, and flexibility becomes part of the experience! Throughout the change, my priority was helping him feel prepared and making sure I could capture the moment while keeping the surprise intact.
There is so much anticipation leading up to a proposal. One person knows what is about to happen, while the other is simply spending time with the person they love. Getting to document the moment those two experiences come together is something I will never take for granted.
The Moment He Asked
With the mountains behind them, he asked Ansley to marry him.
For me, the most meaningful part of photographing a proposal is capturing the reaction as it happens. There is no recreating that first moment of realization or the emotion that follows. My job is to pay attention, give the couple room to experience it, and preserve the moments they will want to remember.
The mountain backdrop was beautiful, but their connection was what made these photographs special. This was the beginning of their engagement, and I was so grateful to be there to document it.
Engagement Photos in the Blue Ridge Mountains
After the proposal, we took time for photographs to celebrate this new chapter.
I love that a proposal session gives couples photographs of both the question itself and those first moments afterward. There is time to take it all in, enjoy being together, and let the excitement settle into the realization that you are getting married.
My approach is to offer enough guidance to help you feel comfortable while leaving room for your personalities and connection to come through. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose. I want your photographs to feel like you and bring you back to how the experience felt.
A Place That Means So Much to Me
The Blue Ridge Parkway is somewhere I love returning to whenever I can. Being able to combine that love for the mountains with photographing such a meaningful moment made this evening especially memorable.
To these two: thank you for trusting me with your proposal and being flexible as our plans changed. It was an honor to capture this part of your story, and I am so excited for everything ahead of you!
